Choosing the right pile height and density

Short pile (20-25mm) is hard-wearing, good for dogs and children but reads a bit sports-pitch. Mid pile (30-35mm) is the sweet spot for most family gardens — looks like a well-maintained lawn, holds up to foot traffic. Long pile (40mm+) is the lushest option but flattens under furniture. We bring sample cuts to the quote visit so you can compare in your actual garden light rather than on a showroom floor.

Base preparation is where most installs fail

A cheap artificial turf install drops grass straight onto old soil — within months it develops lumps, hollows and drainage puddles. We excavate 75-100mm, lay a permeable compacted MOT base, top with granite dust screeded flat, install a weed membrane, and fix the turf with adhesive at the seams and ground pins at the edges. The turf is then brushed and a sand infill added so it stands up.

Drainage, pets and infill choices

Properly installed turf is permeable and drains faster than most lawns. For dog owners we use zeolite-infused infill that neutralises urine smells. For households with children, a shockpad underlay adds impact absorbency. We cover all of this during the quote visit rather than bolting it on at extra cost later.

Designed alongside the rest of the garden

Artificial turf looks best when it is framed by a clean edge — a porcelain patio, block paving, or a wider landscaping scheme. We design the whole back garden together so the turf reads as intentional rather than dropped in.
