Picking the right surface for your driveway

Block paving is the default for most Staines driveways — strong, repairable, and forgiving of future utility work. Resin bound is the modern choice when you want a joint-free, fully permeable surface that handles SuDS rules without a soakaway. Tarmac wins on very large areas where cost per square metre matters most. Granite setts are the premium end. We quote more than one option when more than one makes sense.

Drainage, SuDS and planning permission

Any driveway over 5 square metres that drains onto the highway needs either a permeable surface or a managed soakaway — that is the law, not a preference. We design drainage in from the start: permeable block, permeable resin, French drain, aqua channel or off-plot soakaway, picked to match the surface and the ground conditions. You get one compliant quote, not a surprise at planning stage.

What actually goes underneath a driveway that lasts

The visible surface is maybe 10% of what determines whether the driveway is still flat in 15 years. The other 90% is excavation depth, a properly compacted Type 1 sub-base, the right edge restraint for the surface, and drainage that actually works. We dig, compact, restrain and finish in that order, on every job, whether it is 15 square metres or 150.

Kerb crossings, access widening and gate detailing

Most driveway projects are more than a surface — a dropped kerb may be needed, the access might need widening, a gate post might need relocating, gravel boards and fence returns tidied up. We quote the whole thing so you are not left with a gleaming driveway and a messy perimeter.
