Most people know they want a new drive before they know which surface. Mark talks you through the options at the quote visit; here is the short version.
Choosing a surface
- Block paving: classic look, lots of colours and patterns, and blocks can be lifted for repairs. See block paving.
- Resin bound gravel: smooth, joint-free and permeable, with no loose stones. See resin bound gravel.
- Tarmac: usually the lowest cost per square metre, good for long or wide drives, plainer to look at. See tarmac.
- Pattern concrete: one sealed slab stamped to look like brick or stone, with no joints for weeds. See pattern concrete.
- Natural stone: granite or sandstone setts for a period frontage, the dearest option but very hard-wearing. See natural stone paving.
What goes underneath
Whatever the top surface, a drive is only as good as its base. We dig out to full depth, take the spoil away and lay compacted Type 1 sub-base before the surface goes down, with levels set so water runs away from the house and garage.
Drainage and planning
A new front drive over 5 square metres that drains onto the road needs planning permission unless it is permeable or drains to a soakaway or lawn. Resin bound and permeable blocks get round this; with tarmac or concrete we price in a channel drain or soakaway.
How long it takes
Expect most front driveways to take between three and five working days, depending on size, dig-out and surface. See finished ones in the gallery.
