A patio gets used more than any other part of the garden, so it has to stay level, drain properly and suit how you use it. Most of the patios we lay are porcelain or Indian sandstone.
Porcelain or sandstone?
Porcelain is dense, stain-resistant and keeps its colour, so it suits a crisp, modern look and needs little more than a wash. It costs more per square metre and needs a special primer and careful cutting. Indian sandstone varies in colour and texture, gives a softer traditional look and is usually a little cheaper; it benefits from sealing and weathers over time. You can see both in the gallery.
Base, falls and laying
We dig out, lay and compact a Type 1 base, then bed each slab on a full mortar bed rather than dabs, so there are no hollows to crack or rock. The patio sits at least 150mm below the damp-proof course and falls gently away from the house so rain never runs back towards the walls. Porcelain is primed on the back so it bonds to the mortar.
Jointing, steps and edges
Joints are filled with a brush-in compound or pointed mortar depending on the slab. Where the garden slopes we build steps or a raised level, and finish the edges against lawn, borders or paths so it all ties together.
How long it takes
A typical patio takes 3 to 5 days, longer with steps, walls or a lot of dig-out. Ask M&R for a patio quote.
