Block paving is still the driveway we lay most often in Staines and nearby. It looks smart and takes the weight of a car. Whether it stays flat comes down to the work you never see once the blocks are down.
We dig out the old surface and soil to the depth a driveway needs. Then we lay and compact Type 1 sub-base in layers, with a screeded bed of sharp sand on top. The blocks are laid to pattern, cut in at the edges, then compacted with kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints. Skimping on the base is why cheap drives sink in the wheel tracks.
Every edge is held by a kerb or soldier course set in concrete, so the blocks cannot creep. The surface is laid to falls so rain runs away from the house. It runs to a channel drain, a soakaway or a planted area.
Permeable block paving lets rain through the joints into an open-graded base. That means a new front drive can usually go ahead without a planning application. We tell you at the quote whether yours needs it.
Herringbone is the strongest pattern for cars. Basketweave and stretcher bond suit patios and paths, and a contrasting border frames the whole area. We choose clay or concrete blocks with you to sit well with what is already there.
