Composite vs timber decking for the British weather

Composite decking (WPC or PVC-capped boards) is the low-maintenance modern choice — colour-stable, splinter-free, no annual oiling. Timber decking (hardwood or treated softwood) is warmer underfoot and cheaper up front but needs re-oiling every year or two to avoid greying and rot. We recommend composite for most British gardens because the annual maintenance cost kills the price advantage of timber within five years.

Sub-frame, ventilation and fixings

Almost every decking failure traces back to the frame beneath the boards — joists too close, no airflow underneath, or galvanic corrosion from wrong-grade fixings. We space joists properly, lift the frame off the ground on adjustable pedestals or treated bearers, and use A4 stainless fixings on composite so nothing rusts out. That is the bit you never see but is the reason the deck is still flat after ten winters.

Balustrades, steps and layout around obstacles
