Why tarmac fails and how we stop it

Cheap tarmac jobs fail because the base is too thin, the edges are not restrained, or the surface was laid cold. We dig out to full depth, lay and compact a Type 1 MOT sub-base, install concrete kerb or block edge restraints, and lay the tarmac hot so it compacts properly. That is the difference between a drive that lasts 15+ years and one that cracks in its second winter.

When tarmac is the right choice

Tarmac is strong on large areas where a joint-free, vehicle-grade surface matters more than a decorative finish — long driveways, side accesses, shared parking, farm tracks. For a more decorative finish on the same footprint, block paving, resin bound or pattern concrete are usually the better answer.

Drainage and SuDS

Standard tarmac is impermeable, so for driveways over 5 square metres that drain onto the highway, surface water has to be handled properly — typically a soakaway or a permeable strip at the edge. We tell you up front what is required and price it into the quote.
